Ex-49er’s nephew slain, reportedly during argument about parenting

A man who was fatally shot in Fresno, reportedly during an argument over parenting, was a member of a standout football family including former 49er Tim McDonald.

William “Billy” Wright, 31, was pronounced dead Wednesday afternoon at a Fresno hospital, police said. The suspected killer is his father, also named William Wright.

The Fresno Bee quoted a police spokesman as saying the two had gotten into an argument at the elder Wright’s home over the proper discipline of children, and that the father shot the son once in the chest. The father remained at the scene and was later booked into Fresno County Jail on suspicion of murder, the police said.

The younger Wright had been hired to return this year to College of the Sequoias, in Visalia, where he had previously been a defensive backs coach, the school said.

He had played football at Fresno’s Edison High, Fresno City College and Humboldt State, and had also been a defensive backs coach at Reedley College.

His signing announcement from Humboldt State said his uncle was Tim McDonald, who played for University of Southern California and went on to 12 seasons in the NFL, the last six (1993-99) with the San Francisco 49ers. McDonald won Pro Bowl honors six times and was on the 49ers team that won the Super Bowl in 1995.

McDonald’s two sons — whom he coached at Edison —  played Pac-12 football.  Timothy Jr. (USC) went on to play for the Rams and Dolphins; Tevin (UCLA) was signed by the Raiders but never took the field for them.
