64-year-old California man suspected of shooting, killing neighbor

A 64-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday, June 10, on suspicion of fatally shooting his neighbor in Downtown Long Beach, authorities said.

Around 12:30 p.m., the victim was shot several times along the 700 block of East 1st Street, according to the Long Beach Police Department. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was not identified on Wednesday.

John Higginbotham, 64, was neighbors with and knew the victim, police said. He was arrested on suspicion of the killing, though a motive was still under investigation.

Long Beach Police has asked that anyone with information regarding the shooting to contact Homicide Detectives Eric Thai and Kelsey Myers at 562-570-7244. Anonymous tips may be submitted through “LA Crime Stoppers” by calling 800-222-TIPS.
