Halloween shopping trip turns deadly for ‘loving and caring’ woman, 22, shot in Little Village

A 22-year-old woman who was fatally shot Saturday night after getting home from shopping for Halloween supplies with her mom in Little Village, has been identified, officials said.

Abbigail Somoza was standing on a street in the 2800 block of West 23rd Street around 8:43 p.m. when she reported hearing a loud noise and later feeling pain, police said.

Somoza, of the 2800 block of West 23rd Place, was taken by ambulance to Mount Sinai Hospital and was listed in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the armpit before later dying, police said.

Somoza and her mother had just returned home from shopping for Halloween supplies when shots rang out from about a block away and Somoza was hit, according to a police report obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times. Her mother was not injured.

A Sunday autopsy determined Somoza died of a gunshot wound to her torso, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Her death was ruled a homicide.

A GoFundMe set up by Somoza’s loved ones describes her as “loving and caring.” It had raised more than $2,600 of the $9,000 goal by Monday afternoon.

Candles, rosaries and flowers sit on the sidewalk outside the home where Abbigail Samoza, 22, was killed after she was shot Saturday night in Little Village, Chicago police said.
