Grammy Award-winning rapper/singer/pop star Doja Cat has broken the mold on what it means to be a rap superstar since her 2018 debut album “Amala.” Latto, the first platinum-selling female rap artist from Atlanta and an alum of the reality show “The Rap Game,” joins Doja’s “Tour Ma Vie” world tour, pairing two biracial rappers (both with white mothers and Black fathers).
Both artists have honed their craft since childhood; both are known for their curves and rump shaking in their videos and concerts; and both have pushed boundaries in hip hop with their music while navigating their privilege as fairer-skinned women. Combining their superpowers at the United Center on Saturday, they sent a message to the world that women are the dominant forces in hip hop today.
First up was Latto, who released her fourth album “Big Mama” in May and collaborated with Doja Cat on her Billboard chart-topping single “Okayyy.” In a cheetah-print leotard with her curves on full display, she went straight into attack mode with her own band and dancers dressed in all black. With her commanding voice, she ripped through the song “Big Mama,” where she performed with her near-life-size mascot, a caricature of herself, dancing beside her.
One of the most touching moments was her verse from “POP IT,” a 2025 collaboration with her romantic partner and Grammy Award-winning rapper 21 Savage; it opened with a video of her and 21 bonding with their newborn child. When she performed her mighty anthem “B**** from the Souf” with only her voice and a thunderous band, the whole arena roared with every word.
At 8:45, after an advertising interlude from Meta and Amazon Music, the arena went dark, then two mimes approached the stage and began dancing. Doja Cat, donning an ’80s-inspired spandex outfit with red accessories, came out swinging with “Cards.”
Doja’s creative approach to her songs and the show’s musical direction felt like a celebratory homage to her influences. From the neon-colored suits to the otherworldly live band of mostly Black musicians, the show was a rare mix of Madonna-esque 1980s pop meets early ’90s New Jack Swing, a fusion genre pioneered by Teddy Riley that blended traditional R&B and funk with hip-hop beats. Songs like the empowering “Woman” and “Say So” were refreshed as New Jack Swing, elevating the music to new heights.
Latto returned to the stage with Doja Cat to perform “Okayyy,” their song from Latto’s album “Big Mama.” Their chemistry was on full display as they traded bars and twerk moves on the long runway.
Body positivity was an underlying theme between Latto and Doja Cat, who donned figure-revealing spandex and shook it all profusely. Thanks to the big screens at the United Center, the lucky fans caught every angle.
They’re spitting on decades of sexism and body shaming toward Black women in music who historically have been held to white-centric beauty standards magnified by social media. In a 2023 interview on the Angie Martinez show, Latto got real about how attacks against women for their natural body changes take a tremendous toll on women’s mental health.
“So, when they be like, ‘Oh, she gained weight,’ I’d be like, damn, I need to get on a treadmill. That stuff does mess with your head,” Latto explained to Martinez. “It’s just women in general. We’re held to a standard like you gotta look like you just stepped off a magazine at all times. It’s just like, dang. It’s a lot.”
When Doja Cat gets deep in her hip-hop bag, she truly dominates among the highest tier of dynamic lyricists. Her performances of “Wet Vagina,” followed by “WYM Freestyle” and “Demons,” were her fiercest moments. She sends a message that despite her crossing over as a global pop star, she has never been one to sleep on her elite lyricism.
Before she gave her adoring fans her attention with her playful crowd work on “Silly! Fun!”, she spotted a middle-age white man wearing fashionable aviators and a pink shirt that read “Gay Ally” at the top written in silver marker. Coincidentally (or, was it?), she held a whipped-cream pie, saying he had the “perfect face” for it.
“It’s almost like you planned for this. It’s almost like people signed waivers, and then I pie them because that would be super f—ed up if somebody was allergic to something and then we had some sort of legality issue, and then the whole show would be shut down, and then my leg falls off, my face falls off, my ass falls off, and then the world explodes and…” said Doja Cat.
She then took a deep breath and pushed the pie into his face. The man enjoyed it.
The biracial duo of Doja Cat and Latto on a world tour was a calculated pairing that ultimately won big. For all the celebration of sexuality and booty shaking, the show was an amazing display of two talented and versatile rappers. Some critics say hip hop no longer produces superstars. On Saturday, Doja and Latto smashed that idea with a sledgehammer.
