Bears put left tackle Braxton Jones on injured reserve, elevate DE Marcus Davenport for Jets game

The Bears put left tackle Braxton Jones on injured reserve Saturday, ruling him out for the next four games. Jones already was set to miss the game Sunday against the Jets and now can’t return until the Nov. 2 game against the Seahawks.

Backup swing tackle Theo Benedet took over for Jones when he hurt his knee Monday against the Eagles and will start against the Jets. The Bears could pivot to backup Jordan McFadden or move left guard Joe Thuney to left tackle if he struggles.

The Bears are hopeful to get former second-round pick Ozzy Trapilo back soon, but have been careful not to rush his recovery from a major knee injury. Coach Ben Johnson was optimistic about him returning, but said Friday it wouldn’t be for this game.

“We’re still working out Ozzy just to make sure that the confidence is back,” Johnson said. “He’s looking better each and every week.”

The Bears play at the Packers next week, then visit the Falcons.

They also elevated defensive end Marcus Davenport and cornerback Nick McCloud from their practice squad. That’s a big development for Davenport, who joined the team Aug. 17 and has been working his way into shape. He has 25 career sacks in 77 games.
