Ben Johnson’s former starting quarterback joked that the Bears coach “can’t seem to get out of his own way” during press conferences this season.
Lions quarterback Jared Goff appeared on the “St. Brown Podcast,” hosted by teammate Amon-Ra and former Bear Equanimeous, and was asked about Johnson referencing Goff being slow-footed. Speaking about Case Keenum on Monday, Johnson said that he’s “got a little history … calling plays with someone not-so-mobile.”
Johnson called Goff the next day to apologize in case Goff was offended.
“Ben can’t seem to get out of his own way when he’s talking to the media,” Goff said. “I know there was no ill intent to that. he seems to be a lightning rod for them. They pick up everything he said. “
Johnson told Goff that his comment meant “nothing.” The two are friends and speak often.
“He called me early [Tuesday] morning … “ Goff said in the episode, which was recorded in advance and aired Wednesday morning. “Dude, you’re good.”
After catching a stray from his former offensive coordinator, Goff joked, good-naturedly, that he might have to invoke Johnson’s name when talking about play callers in the future.
The Bears don’t play the Lions until Thanksgiving Day.
