The New York Yankees have had a relatively uneventful MLB offseason outside of being able to re-sign Cody Bellinger to a long-term contract.
Brian Cashman has decided to maintain the roster rather than make aggressive changes. He has received some criticism for his decision to not bring in major outside help, but the Yankees do look to have enough talent on paper to compete in the American League.
While the offseason is quickly winding down, New York still has ways it could make a splash move. One of those ways would involve trading young outfielder Jasson Dominguez.
Following the move to re-sign Bellinger long-term, Dominguez’s future with the Yankees is much more cloudy. There are other rumors buzzing around the team that provides a very uncertain outlook for his future as well.
New York Yankees’ Latest Rumors Are Bad News for Jasson Dominguez
According to a recent report from MLB insider Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Yankees have shown interest in free agent outfielders Randal Grichuk and Austin Slater. While no move has been made for another outfielder, that doesn’t bode well for New York’s belief in Dominguez.
Matthew Schmidt of Roundtable Sports has connected the dots. If the Yankees’ starting outfield is set but they’re showing interest in more depth, that doesn’t bode well for the young outfielder.
“New York’s starting outfield is already set, so why would the Yanks be looking at other outfielders unless it has already deemed Dominguez to be expendable?” Schmidt wrote.
That is a great point from Schmidt. It’s quite possible that Cashman and the front office already know that they’re open to the idea of trading Dominguez. Should the right move present itself, New York might be ready to pull the trigger quickly.
At one point in time, Dominguez was viewed as a rising star. He’s still just 22 years old with plenty of time to reach his full potential. Whether or not the Yankees are going to be patient enough to get that ceiling out of him remains to be seen.
Jasson Dominguez Has Shown Flashes of Superstar Talent
So far with New York, Dominguez has played in 149 Major League games. He has hit 16 home runs to go along with 58 RBI, 29 stolen bases, and a slash line of .248/.327/.397.
In his minor league career within the Yankees’ organization, Dominguez has played in 352 career games. He has racked up 47 home runs, 189 RBI, 102 stolen bases, and a slash line of .274/.373/.444.
Needless to say, it will be interesting to see what New York decides to do. Dominguez would have a lot of value on the trade market, but the Yankees could be making a massive mistake if they choose to deal him away.
Expect to hear more rumors and speculation about the future of the young outfielder. For now, he remains an extremely interesting name to watch on the trade market.
