Former Dolphins Player Signs With Patriots Before Super Bowl

After a 7-10 season, the Miami Dolphins find themselves in a familiar place during the postseason, watching their division rivals contend for championships. The Dolphins have not won a playoff game since the 2000 season. Since then, the New England Patriots have won six Super Bowls and have won their 10th AFC title.

Next week, the Patriots will go up against Seattle in an effort to obtain their seventh Super Bowl. In this version of the Patriots, they are doing something the Dolphins have failed to do since the 2000 season, which is effectively replacing both their head coach and quarterback. The Patriots parted ways with Tom Brady and Bill Belichick after that duo won the franchise’s six Super Bowls, and now they are once again near a title with a young superstar quarterback in Drake Maye and one of the best coaches in the league in Mike Vrabel.

To make matters worse for Dolphins fans, a former Miami player has joined their roster and now has a chance to be crowned a Super Bowl champion for the first time in his career.

Former Dolphins Wide Receiver Joins Patriots

On Jan. 28, the Patriots announced they were signing former Dolphins wide receiver Trent Sherfield to their practice squad. Sherfield spent most of the 2025 season with the Denver Broncos, as he appeared in ten games for them this season. He also played with the Cardinals for two games before being signed to the Patriots’ practice squad.

Sherfield was a member of the Dolphins in the 2022 season, as former head coach Mike McDaniel brought him over from San Francisco as he already was familiar with the offense. With the Dolphins, Sherfield had the best season of his career as he finished with 417 receiving yards on 30 receptions. His highlight of the season came when he scored a 75-yard touchdown to open up the game against the 49ers. Dolphins fans are likely familiar with the play as some have suggested it was the peak of the Dolphins era under Mike McDaniel, one fan on X said of the play, “I thought we were Super Bowl bound.”

Following the 2022 season, the Dolphins did not re-sign Sherfield. Instead, Sherfield signed with the division rival Buffalo Bills. He made headlines with his first comments upon signing in Buffalo as he seemed to take a shot at Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, saying, “If you want to be an elite receiver, come and play with an elite quarterback.”

Now, Sherfield has once again joined a division rival and it may result in getting himself a Super Bowl ring. He joins former Mack Hollins as former Dolphins to be part of the Patriots’ wide receiver room.

Miami Dolphins Playmakers

In 2022, wide receivers were a strength for the Dolphins. The team had recently acquired Tyreek Hill, and posted the best season by a wide receiver in franchise history, and second-year player Jaylen Waddle had the third-best season by a wide receiver in franchise history. Paired with Sherfield’s contributions in the pass game and run game with his strong blocking abilities, the Dolphins offense was seemingly filled with playmaking ability.

Four years later, the Dolphins are in search of playmakers. Tyreek Hill is expected to be released, and Jaylen Waddle has not reached the level he did in the 2022 season. De’Von Achane has become Miami’s most talented playmaker, but the offense as a whole lacks the explosiveness it had in 2022 and 2023.

For that reason, the Dolphins have been predicted to add a playmaker to create potential mismatches on offense and once again provide a potent passing attack in Miami.
