Chargers Faced With Difficult Decision on Star Pass Rusher

The Los Angeles Chargers will be faced with a lot of key decisions during free agency. One could include the fate of pass rusher Odafe Oweh, a player they had just recently acquired via trade last season from Baltimore.

With Oweh set to hit free agency, the Chargers have to decide if they want to devote a certain amount of cap space to keep him in LA or just cut ties with him after one season with the team. Still, with over 85 million dollars in cap space to work with this offseason, the Chargers won’t be hard pressed to spend big in order to build a championship roster.

The Chargers have already made decisions about other free agent players, such as Teair Tart, who just recently signed an extension for three years and 37.5 million dollars, with 20 million guaranteed.

Oweh’s Impact in a Short Time with Los Angeles

What with Oweh being a midseason addition, the Chargers may not want to invest so much money into him as someone like Tart, who has been with the team for two years. Still, when fellow edge rusher Khalil Mack was absent from the lineup, Oweh stepped up in a big way, recording 7.5 sacks, 28 tackles and thirteen quarterback hits. In the Chargers’ Wild Card Round Loss to the Patriots, he had three sacks alone.

Khalil Mack is still yet to make a decision about his retirement, and if he does decide to hang up the cleats, Oweh will be one of the Chargers’ top priorities. Still, there could be several potential suitors that could get his signature.

Free Agency Looms as Suitors Begin to Circle

The Tennessee Titans are a team, just like the Chargers, who have the cap space to spend big in free agency. Add in the fact they just hired defensive minded Robert Saleh to be their new head coach and he could be a highly appealing piece to the puzzle for the rebuilding franchise.

Oweh himself has even suggested that he needs to be on the top of the Chargers’ to-do list this offseason, considering the role he filled for the injured Mack. According to a post on X made by ESPN’ Khris Rhim, Oweh made it clear that he would love to come back to the team.

What with plenty of suitors patiently waiting to see what the deal with Oweh will definitely be someone to look out for, especially considering what his contract could be. His projected market value could be upwards of 57.9 million dollars over three years.

For the Chargers, this will all come down to the events of their own offseason. If they are going to spend big as some expect them to, then Oweh may be someone who falls by the wayside. However, if they decide that the price and value is just right, they may be willing to tie him up for the next three years.

The Chargers’ defense has been one of the best in the NFL over the past two years, and Oweh could be a big reason as to why it could stay that way over the next three.
