Bills Quickly Interview Top Head Coach Candidate After Broncos’ Playoff Elimination

The Buffalo Bills have officially been looking for a new head coach for a week now, and while the team has interviewed a slew of candidates, it feels like a true frontrunner has yet to emerge for the position. That could have changed in the wake of the Denver Broncos‘ loss to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game.

Given the timing of Buffalo’s decision to fire head coach Sean McDermott, it prevented them from talking to potential head coach targets who were still working for teams in the playoffs. With the Broncos getting eliminated from the postseason, though, that freed up passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Davis Webb to interview for Buffalo’s head coach opening.

Bills Finally Interview Davis Webb for Head Coach Gig

The overarching belief across the NFL after Buffalo fired McDermott was that the team was looking to make a splash hire at head coach. While there’s no doubt the Bills feature an attractive head coach opening, the timing of their move to fire McDermott has put them behind the eight-ball when it comes to finding a new leader.

That prevented them from getting a chance to interview Webb until Monday. Ever since McDermott got canned, Webb has been heavily linked to Buffalo, given his ties to the team. While Webb has only worked with the Broncos as a coach, he was Allen’s backup quarterback with the Bills for three seasons from 2019 to 2021.

Allen is reportedly playing a big role in Buffalo’s search for a new head coach, and his relationship with Webb has led to him being a top target for the team. Sure enough, less than 24 hours after Denver was eliminated from the playoffs, Webb interviewed for Buffalo’s head coach job, with some folks believing that he will eventually end up being hired by the team.

“We have completed an interview with Davis Webb for our head coaching position,” the Bills announced in a post on X.

Should the Bills Hire Davis Webb?

There’s been a lot of drama surrounding the Bills’ search for a new head coach, and the team’s interest in Webb has come to personify that. While there’s no doubt Webb is one of the fastest-rising coaches in the league, it remains to be seen if he’s the best fit for Buffalo. Yes, he’s close with Allen, but the problem for the Bills is that Allen is pretty much the only guy on their roster they don’t truly have to worry about.

Buffalo needs a guy who will be able to maximize the rest of the team’s offensive talent, while also building a strong defense that can properly support Allen. Webb only has three years of coaching experience under his belt, and all of them have seen him work on the offensive side of the ball. Keeping Allen happy is important, but if the Bills truly want to contend for titles during his time in town, they shouldn’t hire Webb just because he’s buddies with the team’s star quarterback.
