The Seattle Seahawks were able to watch the wild-card round of the NFL playoffs in their comfy clothes at home over the weekend, because they’re the No. 1 seed in the NFC. But, that vacation is over, and the Seahawks will take on the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL’s divisional round of the playoffs on Saturday, January 17, at Lumen Field.
The 49ers, of course, are familiar opponents. The Seahawks and 49ers are longtime rivals, and the two teams just played each other in Week 18, with Seattle winning, with a 13-3 final score. Plus, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold and San Francisco 49ers signal-caller Brock Purdy are old friends, since Darnold was actually Purdy’s backup quarterback in San Francisco.
When Darnold came to Seattle, he was reunited with Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak. The two worked together in San Francisco during the 2023-24 season, when Kubiak was the 49ers’ passing game coordinator and Darnold was Purdy’s quarterback No. 2. That team reached the big game, and it was a significant milestone for both Purdy and Darnold.
So, these two players will go up against each other yet again, and even though they may be friends off the field, they’re opponents on it, especially during the playoffs. Now, the Seattle Seahawks have gotten some good news going into the matchup.
Seattle Seahawks Get Wind on Their Backs Before San Francisco 49ers Game
Heading into the game, the Seattle Seahawks have some positive news in that they’re wide favorites to beat the 49ers. According to research from the oddsmakers at FanDuel Sportsbook, Seattle is a -6.5 favorite over San Francisco. That’s nearly a touchdown and the extra point.
Considering the Seahawks just beat the 49ers, that’s a good sign that they can do it again, and oddsmakers agree. It also helps that the game is right at home in Seattle, as it was in Week 18. Get ready to make some noise.
“It’s a little funky going against a team two games in a row,” Seattle coach Mike Macdonald said during an interview on “Sunday Night Football” on January 11. “So we got to do a great job of debriefing and having some answers, knowing that Kyle has some stuff dialed up for us.”
Macdonald also called the 49ers a “heck of a team” and said, “We’ve got to play great situational football.”
The NFL’s full divisional round of the playoffs will take place on Saturday, January 17, and Sunday, January 18. Then, the AFC Championship game is set for January 25 at 3 p.m., and the NFC Championship is set for 6:30 p.m. The Super Bowl is scheduled for February 8 at 6:30 p.m. on NBC.
Sam Darnold Has Proven Himself With the Seattle Seahawks
In Darnold’s first year with the Seattle Seahawks, he’s led them to the No. 1 seed in the NFC. He’s simply proven himself, time and time again.
“It’s the people, first and foremost,” Darnold said after signing his contract in March 2025. “I’m just very excited to get in the building, meet everyone. You kind of hear rumors when you’re playing on other teams about the good organizations and the places to be, and this was definitely one of them for me.”
