Red Sox Linked to 49-Home Run Star After Losing Alex Bregman

The Boston Red Sox got some bad news over the weekend, as they lost out on Alex Bregman. This is because the 31-year-old star infielder signed a five-year, $175 million contract with the Chicago Cubs in free agency, officially putting an end to his Red Sox tenure. Now, the Red Sox have a massive hole on their roster that they will need to address.

It is no secret that the Red Sox wanted to keep Bregman around. It is entirely understandable, as he made a big impact during his only season with the American League East club. In 114 games with the Red Sox during the 2025 campaign, he had 18 home runs, 62 RBIs, and a .273 batting average. He was also an All-Star for the third time in his career due to his strong play.

While losing Bregman undoubtedly is a tough blow for the Red Sox, they must now move on and try to find his replacement. With the Red Sox looking to be among the top teams in the league in 2026, they must land another star talent before the season starts.

Due to this, the Red Sox have now been linked to one of baseball’s top power-hitting free agents.

Star Slugger Eugenio Suarez Named Potential Target for Red Sox

In a recent article for The Athletic, Jen McCaffrey took a look at a few potential targets for the Red Sox after losing Bregman to the Cubs. Among the players whom McCaffrey discussed is star slugger Eugenio Suarez.

“The Red Sox have been tied to Suárez for months, with a league source noting the team pursued him at the trade deadline last summer with the intent of shifting him from third base to first base. Now with an opening at third sans Bregman, the Red Sox may shift their sights again to the slugger,” McCaffrey wrote.

With the Red Sox needing to find a replacement at third base for Bregman, it makes sense that Suarez is being viewed as a potential fit for Boston. He is the top third baseman still available on the free-agent market and would certainly have the potential to be a nice addition to Boston’s roster.

Suarez is also coming off a big season at the plate. In 159 games split between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners, he had 49 home runs and a career-high 118 RBIs. This was his second 49-home run season and the sixth time in his career that he hit at least 30 home runs. With this, there is no question that he would give Boston’s offense a nice boost and provide them a clear option for the cleanup spot in their lineup.

Red Sox Will Have Competition for Suarez

With Suarez being one of the top free agents left on the market, it is clear that the Red Sox would have plenty of competition for him if they enter the sweepstakes. Among the teams that have been connected to Suarez this winter include the Mariners, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Los Angeles Angels.

However, with Boston in desperate need of another star, it would make all the sense in the world for them to kick tires on Suarez. It will be interesting to see if they end up being the team that successfully signs him from here.
