Packers Writer Suggests Team May Move On From Team Captain

The Green Bay Packers are no doubt still reeling from a second half implosion against the Chicago Bears on Saturday night, but things have already started to turn towards offseason matters.

Chiefly, who the Packers will send out at head coach in 2026. Despite multiple calls for him to be let go, Adam Schefter reported earlier on Monday morning that the team are currently expected to retain and work out an extension for current head coach, Matt LaFleur.

However, beyond the matters of the coaching staff, there is no doubt that there will be personnel changes come the new league year in March. And one of those changes could come at the expense of one of the team’s most talented and senior players.

Pro Bowl team captain, Rashan Gary, has had a very up and down career with Green Bay after being selected in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft with the 12th overall pick.

And Andy Herman of the Pack-A-Day podcast hinted via a post on X on Sunday afternoon that the Gary’s time in Green Bay may be up.

Could Rashan Gary’s Time Be Over In Green Bay?

Sharing a video of Gary jogging to catch up quarterback, Caleb Williams, at a slower-than-desired pace, Herman captioned the post, “One last little jog for team captain Rashan Gary in green n gold?” – noting that the lack of effort is emblematic of his long stint with the Packers.

This is obviously not a full-scale, long-form prediction by the Packers writer, but it is revealing in that Herman believes that there is a very real chance that Gary’s time in Wisconsin may have come to a close.

Multiple commenters on the post seemed to echo Herman’s conclusion with one noting the stark difference between his performance and athleticism in 2021 compared to this season.”Watch a clip of 2021 Rashan Gary and then watch 2026 and you’ll swear they aren’t even the same guy. Kids today will never know that he was drafted because he was an athletic freak who ran a 4.58.

Another argued that Gary’s seeming lack of effort and inability to continuously shine could have been a reason behind his lack of praise from a certain All-Pro teammate. “Maybe this is why Parsons seemed to hype anyone but Gary when interviewed.”

Gary Never Managed To Live Up To His Full Potential

Coming in with sky-high expectations as a hyper-athletic, capable pass-rusher out of Michigan in 2019, many expected Gary to have an All-Pro ceiling, if the team could harness his immense raw talent.

After not rushing him for the first couple of seasons and letting him sit behind the Packers’ former “Smith Brothers” (who are not related) pass-rushing duo of Preston and Za’Darius Smith, Gary took over the DE1 role on the team.

But he has never really managed to prove himself as a top-level edge rusher in the NFL through any one season – despite him showing out in individual games – over the course of his seven year career in the pros.

He has never managed a single double-digit sack season with the Packers.

And a lack of production, combined with what many regard to be a mediocre work ethic on the field, could seal his fate in 2026.

The Packers would save around $11 million by cutting Gary this offseason, per Spotrac.
