New York Mets Surface in Major MLB Free Agency Bombshell

The New York Mets have had a relatively quiet MLB offseason, which is not what was expected from the team following the conclusion of the 2025 season.

After spending huge money last offseason to sign superstar outfielder Juan Soto, the team did not come close to living up to the hype. In fact, the Mets missed the playoffs with an 83-79 record.

Heading into this offseason, New York was expected to be aggressive. So far, the Mets have lost both Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz. Their best free agency signing has been relief pitcher Devin Williams, who is far from a guarantee to be a high-impact pickup.

With that being said, a new bombshell report has been shared about New York.

According to a January 10 report from Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Mets remain a player to watch when it comes to both superstar outfielder Kyle Tucker and star starting pitcher Framber Valdez.

“I believe the Mets are very much in play for a significant free agent such as Kyle Tucker and/or Framber Valdez, and are seeing if the players’ markets and their tolerance blend or if they will have to focus elsewhere for an outfielder, starter and a reliever or two,” Sherman wrote.

What Would the New York Mets Add By Signing Kyle Tucker?

Tucker was considered to be the best free agent on the market entering the offseason. His market has not developed as he had hoped, but there are a handful of teams interested in him.

Last season with the Chicago Cubs, Tucker hit 22 home runs and drove in 73 RBI, while also slashing .266/.377/.464. He produced those numbers in 136 games, while also dealing with some injury issues along the way.

A lineup including both Soto and Tucker would be deadly. Opposing pitching staffs would have nightmares when facing New York.

He isn’t going to be cheap. The Mets would have to pay up to get him. However, signing a player like Tucker could put New York over the top as one of the best teams in the National League.

Framber Valdez Could Be What the Doctor Ordered for Mets

Bringing in starting pitching should also be a priority for the Mets. Valdez is one of the best arms available and would be the kind of high-impact addition the New York rotation needs.

Valdez made 31 starts for the Houston Astros last season, compiling a 13-11 record to go along with a 3.66 ERA, a 1.24 WHIP, a 2.8 K/BB ratio, and 192 innings pitched. Back in 2024, he went 15-7 in 28 starts with a 2.91 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP.

Again, a move for Valdez would not come cheap. For the Mets to go all-in on competing in 2026, they’re going to need to open up the checkbook.

Fans can only wait anxiously to see how seriously New York wants to win a World Series. Signing either Tucker or Valdez would put the Mets in a position to pursue that goal.

Expect to hear more rumors surrounding the team. For now, they’re still a team worth monitoring for both of these star players.
