Matt LaFleur’s Packers Future Gets Major Update Before Bears Clash

The Green Bay Packers will look to extend their season on Saturday night when they square off against the Chicago Bears for the third time this year. Should they lose, though, all eyes will turn to head coach Matt LaFleur, whose future with the team has been the subject of much speculation throughout the 2025 campaign.

While LaFleur still has one year left on his current contract, some folks have wondered whether his job could be in jeopardy if the Packers bow out of the postseason early for the second straight year. And ahead of this big game against the Bears, a major update regarding LaFleur’s future with Green Bay has surfaced that will surely catch the attention of fans everywhere.

Packers Set to Discuss Matt LaFleur Contract Extension Over the Offseason

Since taking over as the Packers’ head coach in 2019, LaFleur has generally been one of the more successful coaches in the league. This is the sixth time in seven seasons he’s led Green Bay to the postseason, but the problem is that, once it has made it there, it hasn’t had much success. LaFleur has just a 3-5 record in the playoffs, despite the collective talent his teams have featured during that stretch.

Even in the regular season, LaFleur’s squads have left something to be desired. That was certainly true this year, as the Packers struggled to consistently win games, leading to them finishing the year with a 9-7-1 record. With that in mind, some folks believe that LaFleur is coaching for his job against the Bears.

LaFleur’s contract situation certainly hasn’t helped when it comes to the rumors surrounding his future with the team, but it doesn’t appear as if his job is truly in jeopardy. According to a recent report from NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the two sides are slated to begin discussing a new deal once the season ends, regardless of what happens in the playoffs.

“Sources say the Packers plan to engage head coach Matt LaFleur in contract discussions shortly after the season ends, with the mutual goal of extending his contract,” Rapoport wrote for NFL.com. “LaFleur, whose deal expires following the 2026 season, has a 76-40-1 record and is widely considered to be one of the better coaches in the NFL.”

Should the Packers Extend Matt LaFleur’s Contract?

Across the NFL, there has been quite a bit of chaos when it comes to the head coach carousel, which may have helped make this decision an easy one for the Packers. With several other teams experiencing instability at the head coach position, having a proven leader in LaFleur is a luxury that the franchise simply cannot afford to move on from.

Sure, LaFleur hasn’t always met expectations, but he’s weathered a storm of injuries this season to help keep Green Bay in the hunt for a championship. And even though they are the No. 7 seed in the NFC, the Packers are expected to have a great shot at sending their longtime division rival, the Bears, home for the season when they square off on Saturday night.
