Shedeur Sanders Given Major Update on Future as Browns QB

The Cleveland Browns will have to make some interesting decisions this offseason at quarterback.

Cleveland has been rolling with Shedeur Sanders as its starting quarterback, and he has shown flashes of potentially being an impact guy. However, the Browns could still use their first-round pick on a quarterback or acquire a veteran to be their franchise guy.

Although Sanders has shown some success, Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com still believes the team is uncertain about what they will do at quarterback.

“When the Browns know their draft spot and who’s coming out, they’ll factor those into the debate over whether or not to move forward with Sanders as their QB1 for 2026,” Cabot wrote. “The decision will largely come down to whether or not the Browns believe that Sanders has more upside than one of the draft picks. It will be impossible to know for sure if he can be their QB of the future on a seven-game sample size.

“Even if plays well in Cincinnati, it will still be difficult to determine if he’ll be a playoff-caliber QB over the next few years. The Browns will have to go on Sanders’ traits and their own gut instincts about his potential. But each week, he’s shown enough to remain in the conversation for the role, and he’s got one last shot next week to bolster his resume.”

Sanders has one more week to prove he can be the Browns’ franchise quarterback. But his play has likely been good enough to get another year and allow Cleveland to draft for other needs and potentially look to add a quarterback in 2027.

Sanders Believes There’s More Work to do

Although the Browns pulled off an upset win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, Sanders knows there’s more work to be done.

Sanders was happy with his performance, but felt like the offense let points get away from them, which the team needs to capitalize on.

“It felt good getting a win overall and especially the team we won against,” Sanders said postgame on Sunday. “I think it’s been bittersweet because I feel like the offense, we got to do our part. I got to do my part a little bit more, we can’t be happy with only 13 points on the board. So, we just got to be able to put up more points.”

Sanders led the Browns to a 13-6 win at home. It was the rookie quarterback’s first win at home, and he was glad to get that under his belt.

“It’s extremely exciting to get the win at home, for sure,” Sanders added. ‘I’ve been needing to win at home for a minute, so that’s what’s good, that’s what I’m excited for, that we brought that feeling back in this place.”

Sanders finished the game going 17-of-23 for 186 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions, while also rushing for 20 yards.

Browns Coach Impressed With Sanders

Cleveland pulled off the upset win on Sunday as the Browns’ defense played well.

But Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski was also impressed with Sanders’ play and believes there is a lot to build on.

“Yeah, obviously he wins, you know, gotta win,” Stefanski said postgame. “So that’s great for the young man. Gets to beat Pittsburgh, gets to beat a division rival. So, they’re not going to be easy, not in this division. So proud of him for that.

“There are always things he can clean up. I thought we got a little unlucky on that first interception. We can certainly learn from the second one and he will. But, yeah, he continued to battle.”

Cleveland will end its 2025 NFL season on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.
