High wind watch issued for Los Angeles County for Sunday and Monday – gusts as high as 65 mph

Western Santa Monica Mountains Recreational area, Santa Susana Mountains, 5 Freeway corridor near Santa Clarita and Western San Gabriel Mountains/Highway 14 Corridor are under a high wind watch which was released by the National Weather Service on Saturday at 11:45 a.m. The watch is valid from Sunday 10 p.m. until Monday Dec. 29, at 3 p.m.

The NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard CA said, “North to northeast winds 25 to 40 mph with gusts up to 65 mph possible.”

“Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are possible. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles,” according to the NWS. “Monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates.”

When it comes to high wind alerts, understanding the levels of risk is crucial. The NWS classifies them into three distinct categories:

High wind warning: Take action!

Sustained, strong winds with even stronger gusts are happening. Seek shelter. If you are driving, keep both hands on the wheel and slow down.

Wind advisory: Take action!

Strong winds are occurring but are not so strong as to warrant a High wind warning. Objects that are outdoors should be secured and caution should be taken if driving.

High wind watch: Be prepared!

Sustained, strong winds are possible. Secure loose outdoor items and adjust plans as necessary so you’re not caught outside.
