The nations in the biggest FIFA World Cup of all time learned their groups for next summer’s tournament on Friday in Washington, DC.
The 48-team event, which will be hosted in the United States, Mexico and Canada, will begin June 11 in Mexico City.
The three host countries were placed in Pot 1 for the draw, along with Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, England, France, Germany, Netherlands, Portugal and Spain.
The US men’s national team is in Group D and will play two of its three group games at SoFi Stadium. The opener is set for June 12 against Paraguay. The Americans’ second group game will be against Australia on June 19 in Seattle. The final game will be June 25 against the winner of the playoff between Turkiye, Romania, Slovakia and Kosovo.
The USMNT recently played friendlies against Australia on Oct. 14 and Paraguay on Nov. 15, winning both.
Mexico was drawn into Group A. El Tri will open the tournament June 11 against South Africa and will also face South Korea and the winner of the series between Denmark, North Macedonia, Ireland and Czechia.
Canada will open June 12 against the winner of the playoff series featuring Italy, Northern Ireland, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Wales.
The complete schedule, along with each specific match venue and kickoff time, will be announced at 9 a.m. Saturday.
“This will be unique, stellar, spectacular,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino said. “This is like 104 Super Bowls in one month.”
